The entry into force of the EU Nature Restoration Law establishes a new, legally binding framework that, for the first time, obliges Member States to actively and extensively regenerate damaged river systems, floodplains, and peatlands. To help achieve these goals practically at the municipal level, a two-year pilot project in Bavaria presents Landscape Management Associations (LPVs) as reliable and competent partners for implementing the Water Framework Directive on smaller watercourses. Using the Döberten and Krassach streams as practical examples, the report documents exactly how the targeted removal of disused weirs can successfully restore ecological continuity for aquatic organisms.
