WRRL-Info 40 "Dam Removal Stories"

The successful removal of four dams on the Klamath River, evidenced by the rapid return of salmon to historical spawning grounds, demonstrates the immense potential of river restoration. At the same time, the critical state of salmon populations in the Lower Snake River underscores the urgent need for further dam removals to save local ecosystems. On a global scale, mega-dams also cause frequently underestimated climate damage: in Arctic regions in particular, they contribute to local warming and massively disrupt sensitive marine nutrient cycles by altering natural freshwater flows.
